In the first 9 months of 2024 Turkey’s exports of natural stones reached worth of $US 1.420 million, remaining on the previous year’s level (0.7% less than in the same period in 2023). More marked, instead, was a drop in the volumes exported – some 4.5 million tons – lower by 4.4% (data from Turkstat, the Turkish Statistical Institute). We remind readers than in 2023 the country’s stone exports had dropped 7% in value, to US$ 1.800 million, for about 6 million tons (-11.7%).
A look at the composition of Turkish exports shows that from January to September last year there was continuation of the downturn in foreign sales of raw materials (including both marbles and travertines), which decreased by 7.2% for $US 449.3 million. As for exports of finished and semi-finished products, there was good growth in travertines (+11.8% for $US 231.1 million) and stability in marbles (-1% for 667 million).
Market ranking for the first nine months of 2024 saw the United States (with $US 319.8 million, a 10.8% increase) surpassing China, whose imports decreased by 9.4% (to $US 289 million), which was followed by India (103 million, down 8.2%) and Saudi Arabia (stable at 84.5 million).
Finally, from January to October last year Italian exports to Turkey of natural stone extraction and processing technologies grew by 34.5%, reaching worth of 61.4 million euros, a figure putting Turkey in second place among sector buyers (data from the CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center).
