From January to September 2023 Spain’s exports of natural stone – both raw and finished products – reached worth of 667.2 million euros, showing a slight (-2.3%) decline from the same period in 2022 (CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center processing of Comtrade data). Analyzing the composition of Spain’s stone exports in the first 9 months of last year it should be emphasized that finished products accounted for about 86% of the overall value of foreign sales, with 577.5 million (-2.4% from the same period in 2022).
In detail, worked slate (“pizarra”, of which Spain is the world’s top exporter) was in first place among the materials exported, with a more than 47% share of the total (for 315.6 million, up 3%), followed by finished marbles and granites with 36% (240.6 million, down 6.1%).
We remind readers that Spain is a market of primary importance for the Italian techno-stone industry. According to statistics from the CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center, in both 2021 and 2022 Spain was the second destination – behind the United States – for Italy’s exports of machinery, equipment, installations and complementary products for extracting and processing ornamental stones, with imports worth, respectively, 77.5 and 66.6 million euros. In the first 10 months of 2023 sales of stone technologies Made in Italy to Spain instead saw a decline of some 30% – a slowdown partially physiological after the record sales in the previous two years – to 36.6 million.
