CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE is a partner of PNA | Pietra Naturale Autentica (Authentically Natural Stone, https://www.naturalstoneisbetter.com/en/), the network of companies created to promote and protect natural stone products, that at Marmo+Mac 2024 presented a world premiere of the “World” LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) study, a pioneering analysis of the life cycle of stone materials processed in Italy.
“Among the fundamental points of PNA’s mission”, declared Stefan Ghirardi, the network’s president, “the sustainability issue has particular importance. In fact, PNA transforms the resource that is natural stone into a constant commitment to sustainability through shared codes of behavior and vanguard technical studies of the sector like the recent World LCA, the first one to evaluate the environmental impact of natural stones processed in Italy, taking into account the product’s entire life cycle whatever the geographical provenance of the raw materials”.
Engineer Claudia Chiappino (Turin Polytechnic), head of the PNA Sustainability Project, illustrated the results of this extremely important work, emphasizing how broadening the analysis of recent years (LCA “Italy”) to products from all over the world confirmed the excellent environmental performance of stone products 100% Made in Italy.
The environmental impact of transporting materials extracted abroad and processed in Italy – while slightly higher – in fact remains within the same order of magnitude. Taking into consideration all the materials analyzed, the average impact on climate change of a slab of stone material 2 cm thick is 12.5 kg CO2 per eq/square meter.
