According to data issued by Assimagra, the Portuguese stone association, last year the country’s exports of natural stones – both raw and finished products – registered a downturn in value of 5.4% from the previous year, totaling 470.1 million euros. Even greater was the drop (9.7%) in the volumes exported, amounting to 1.76 million tons, with consequent growth in the average price of stone materials sold on foreign markets rising, by 4.7% to 267.80 euros per ton. We remind readers that in 2023 exports by Portuguese stone companies had touched record worth of 469.7 million euros although the amounts exported had declined by 5% (to about 1.94 million tons).
In 2024 the European market bought more than half of the exports of marbles, granites and other natural stones extracted and/or worked in Portugal (250.1 million euros, or 53.19% of the total), a downturn of 7.5% from 2023. The top destination market was France, with 103.4 million in imports (+3.3%), followed by China (61.6 million, -11.8%), Spain (51.2 million, -10.7%, the United States (32.5 million, +2%), Germany (24.6 million, -11.2%), the United Kingdom (24.3 million, -5.1%) and Vietnam (19.7 million, +8.4%).
As concerned trade with Italy, we mention that last year Portugal ranked 9th among markets for Italian technologies for extracting and processing natural stones, with purchases worth 31.2 million euros (CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center data).
