According to data processed by the Northwestern Tuscany Chamber of Commerce and the Studies and Research Institute (ISR) using ISTAT data, in 2022 foreign sales of stone materials – both raw and worked – accounted for about a fourth of the Massa-Carrara province’s total exports, reaching worth of 618.3 million euros (up 12.2% from the 551 million of 2021).
In a context characterized by a 2.7% decline in the province’s exports (to 2.33 billion euros), last year there was particularly good performance in the finished and semi-finished stone product sector, which with foreign sales of 416.6 million euros showed growth of 17.9%, or 63 million more than in 2021. The top market was the United States, which accounted for nearly half of Apuan exports of worked marbles and granites (for a total of 197 million), with an increase of 25.1%. Sales were also good to Middle East markets, especially to Saudi Arabia (+50.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+13.1%).
More contained were foreign sales of raw stone materials, which by the end of 2022 had amounted to 202 million euros, about 4 million more in absolute value than the previous year, meaning an increase of 2%. Half of these exports (worth about 200 million) were to China, which nonetheless decreased its purchases by 11.7% from 2021, offset by growth in sales to India (+113.3%), Egypt (+66.1%), Morocco (+40.5%) and Germany (+63.3%).
