The stone and stone technology sector was also covered in the work done at the IV Intergovernmental Italy-Algeria Summit held in Algiers thanks to a cooperation agreement between CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE, the Confindustria association representing the entire Italian stone/stone technology industry, signed by its Honorary President in charge of official relations, Flavio Marabelli, and FAMMIP, Fédération Algérienne Des Minéraux du Secteur Minier et de l’Industrie de la Pierre, signed by its president Djalal Guittoune.
The agreement was formalized on July 18 at the residence of the president of the Algerian Republic during the intergovernmental summit held in Algiers, in the presence of the President of Algeria, Abdeimadjid Tebboune and the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The agreement was also backed by the Algerian Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
This cooperation agreement in the stone sector, which foresees technology transfers and highly professional training in the latest technologies for extracting and working natural stones, is part of the bilateral relations between Italy and Algeria, historically excellent and currently especially positive.
We mention that Italy is Algeria’s third-ranking commercial partner globally (its top buyer and sixth-place supplier) while Algeria is Italy’s number-one commercial partner on the African continent. Last year the worth of trade between the two countries reached 7.34 billion euros, of which 5.58 billion in Algerian imports to Italy (+77.6%) and 1.76 billion in Italian exports to Algeria (-9.1%).
In regard to the stone sector, in 2021 Italy’s exports of machines, installations, equipment and consumables for natural stone extraction and processing to the North African country amounted to nearly 20 million euros, an increase of 129% from 2020. Italy also exported more than 7 million euros worth of stone materials to Algeria in 2021 (data from the CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center).
The intergovernmental summit that witnessed the signing of this cooperation agreement preceded the ITALY-ALGERIA BUSINESS FORUM organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in collaboration with the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ICE-Italian Trade Agency for the foreign promotion and internationalization of Italian companies.
